Through a Project Grant in 2016, AllPeopleBeHappy foundation supported Indego Africa’s Vocational and Business Training Program in Rwanda. 90 participants were placed at 10 different artisan cooperatives, where for 3 days per week, they received artisan skills training and mentorship from cooperative leaders. This included training in techniques such as basket-making, beading, banana leaf weaving, and sewing. For the other two days per week, the young women gathered at a central classroom space in Kigali and participated in the Business Training Program – a 25-lesson course that covers fundamental business topics including organizational governance, bank account management, bookkeeping, quality control, budgeting, technology use for finance and inventory, communications, and marketing. This program has not only provided a career path in the artisan sector for 90 young women, but also helped strengthen existing artisan cooperatives in Rwanda. By bringing in a pipeline of younger artisans with secondary school education, business training, and strong technology skills, Indego has supplied existing partner co-ops with valuable, intergenerational benefits for years to come.
