In 2018, Mercado Global provided Community-Based Education training sessions to 350 sewing, weaving, and embroidering women artisans in Guatemala. As Mercado Global enters the second year of a 3-year scaling initiative to serve 800 artisans by 2020, many of the women in its 38 cooperatives are in the training phase since it has recently onboarded 152 new artisans. Many of these artisans are being exposed to comprehensive information on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, women’s health and nutrition for the very first time. With an increasing number of artisans opening bank accounts and beginning to save, Mercado Global is confident that the programming in market access, community education, and asset development are opening new opportunities for their partner artisans.
