In 2018, the Foundation initiated an Opportunity Project to bring solar energy to primary schools in Tanzania. A pilot project to electrify 10 primary schools in the Karagwe District of northern Tanzania was carried out using Amizade as the fiscal agent, Mavuno as the on-site manager, and Zola Electric as the utility contractor. This “solar electrification” consist of roof-top solar panels, light bulbs, TVs, radios, and phone charging strips. After completing two surveys to assess the utility and impact of this “solarization,” we committed ourselves to a goal of solar electrifying all 111 primary schools in the Karagwe and Kyerwa Districts of the Kagera Region. Thus far in 2019, we have completed 12 more primary schools. The installation was conducted in February and March, and all equipment is guaranteed for 5 years. These schools now have electricity and educational programming essentially cost free for the foreseeable future.
