In the application for our Volunteer Service Award, we ask the applicant to tell us “What do you feel will lead to a world where All People Can Be Happy?” In this and four other blogs are excerpts from the applications of several of this year’s grant recipients which describe their thoughts.
2014 VSA Recipient Karen Lin: “I believe that a world where every single person can be considered as healthy as they can possibly be will lead to one where everyone will be happy. Coming from someone who is approaching the question from a public health point of view, in many of my classes we often discuss how health can affect a person’s life and by targeting poor health with the intent to make someone healthier, a number of opportunities will open up for them. Not only will their lives change for the better, but then they have the power to help their communities, immediate family, and future generations. Although, many often think of providing actual care, such as vaccinations, as the sole method for allowing people to thrive, I believe that other methods such as education about hygiene or a supply of toilets to an impoverished community can have very positive effects.”
