An interesting success story from our Project Grant recipient Project Alianza, the first non-profit in Nicaragua to collaborate with large coffee estates to create strategies for implementing schools in rural communities: “Maya, age 12, had never held a writing instrument or enrolled in school before attending the Project Alianza School. She worked at her grandfather’s small coffee farm all of her life, caring for her younger sister, helping prepare food, and tending to the coffee fields. Less than a year later, Maya is enrolled in first grade at the Project Alianza School at Finca la Aurora. She can write letters, read basic words, and loves coloring. While at school, she is able to focus on her schooling because her younger sibling is cared for in a dedicated preschool room.”
