Village Health Works (VHW) operates a health clinic in the village of Kiguta, Burundi. Since its opening in 2007, the clinic has seen over 100,000 patients, and expanded its programs to include education, agriculture, and economic development. The AllPeopleBeHappy foundation in 2009-2011 provided $30,000 in grants to support the development of a comprehensive food security program that includes on-site agriculture components, family gardens, and village cooperative farming. From 2012 to 2016, annual grants of $10,000 provide the basis for VHW’s educational initiative. The VHW Educational Initiative is providing direct support for local students and training and development for educators throughout Burundi. The program involves five main components: a teacher training program, an after-school study and activities program, student competitions that improve engagement and enthusiasm, learning material support to all the students to enable participation, and parents awareness raising efforts.
